Well, howdy folks. Let's talk about the good ol' music industry, specifically the part where a...
The Homestead Skill That Saves Time and Effort
Last time, we covered the physical skill of maintenance. This week, we're focusing on the mental skill that governs all successful work: Mastering the Blueprint (Skill #2).
Every song, every project, every meal—it all starts as a vague idea. The notebook (Tool #3) is where you turn that initial energy into clarity and purpose.
As Abraham Lincoln famously said: "Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe." The blueprint is the sharpening.
The 3 Steps to Turning Ideas Into Action
Here is the simple process I use to save time, reduce frustration, and ensure I build what I intended to build:
-
The Raw Capture: Get the idea down immediately. Don't worry about order or logic. Use shorthand, draw crude sketches, or scribble fragmented thoughts. The goal is to unload the mental clutter onto the page. This keeps the idea alive and prevents the "I'll remember that later" mistake.
-
The High-Level Vision: Dedicate time to turning the chaos into a clear final image. What is the single, non-negotiable end goal? Draw the thing (even if you can't draw well), or list the three core functions of the project. This gives the work a fixed target.
-
The Reverse Engineer: Start with the finished product (Step 2) and work backward. What is the final thing you do? What comes immediately before that? By breaking the project into small, actionable steps (e.g., "Cut timber," "Dig post holes," "Affix hardware"), you eliminate overwhelm. Now, you only have one small task to complete at a time.
The Philosophy: You are not wasting time when you plan. You are multiplying your effort. Clarity on the page translates directly to speed and accuracy in the shop.
WANT TO SEE THE BLUEPRINT IN ACTION? The best way to learn this process is by seeing how I organize my own notebook for a real project. That's why I share detailed blueprints, build logs, and Skill Lessons every week in the TS Homestead Nation community. The value here is organized knowledge that skips the guesswork.
THE CULMINATION OF THE CODE (Artifacts)
There’s another kind of payout that is reserved exclusively for the members of the Nation. The culmination of the Integrity of Craft principle results in the Artifacts—the one-of-a-kind, handmade knives and tools forged right here in the shop. These are not for sale in a public store. As a member of the TS Homestead Nation (starting with your 7-day free trial), you get exclusive, first-look access to the private Artifacts Folder where these high-integrity tools are made available. They are built exclusively for those committed to the Code.
