Why Sharpening Your Knife Changes Everything

You've got your high-quality fixed-blade knife—Tool #1 on the checklist. But a tool is only as good as the skill you bring to it. And no skill is more fundamental to a grounded life than sharpening and maintenance.

A dull blade isn't just inefficient; it's a sign of a distracted mind, and it's dangerous. Sharpening is the commitment you make to preparedness, precision, and the respect your work deserves.

The 3 Essentials of a Lasting Edge

You don't need a complicated system. You need discipline and a simple whetstone. Here's what I focus on:

  1. Find Your Angle and Hold It: The entire process hinges on consistency. If you have a primary bevel on your blade, you need to match that angle. For most quality general-purpose knives, aim for 20° per side. The challenge is maintaining that angle for every single stroke. This focus is the ultimate mental discipline.

  2. Use the Whole Stone: Don't just work the center. Use the full length of your stone to ensure even wear and a consistent surface. This is a subtle lesson in life: don't let your focus narrow to just one spot. Engage fully.

  3. Listen for the Whisper: Sharpening isn't a loud, aggressive action. The sound of the blade on the stone should be a gentle, consistent whisper. If you're hearing a harsh grind, you're using too much pressure or the wrong angle. Light pressure, consistent angle. That's the secret to getting the burr you need before switching to the finer stone for polishing.

The Philosophy: When your focus wanders, your angle slips. When your angle slips, your edge dulls. The maintenance of your tool is the mirror of the maintenance of your mind.

A QUICK NOTE ON THIS SKILL: This is a tactile skill, and seeing it done makes all the difference. I'm finishing up a short video demonstration of this exact process in my workshop. Keep an eye on your inbox—I'll send it as soon as it's ready. In the meantime, start practicing your angle.
